I agree with everyone. Leave it! If it has a wood venir on it you could buy a tinted wood polish...I believe it's called Restore-A-FInish, I've used it on my kitchen cabinets and you wouldn't believe how awesome it makes them look. Then I put a coat of Beeswax polish on them which hydrates the wood. Together it's about a ten dollar make-over that really looks great!
Also, I like the whole area...the painting, the books, and everything.
Leave it! I like it the way it is.
